Abhijit Banerjee

If there was an award for straight from the heart account of the past two decades this one would be the best contender. Short sweet and yet you can feel the joy and perhaps the sweat of making it on ones own in a foreign country. I have it on very reliable account that it is not easy. So hats of to Abhijit.

Adhiraj "Baba" Dutt

It seems that Adhiraj has settled in Mirzapur (he calls it miserypur) and is busy making carpets and exporting them. Rumor has it that he uses child labor and exploits them thoroughly. And when a team of inspectors come to find out who these children or "babas" are his paid goons bring these guys to our man. And since he continues to look like a baba they think he is the child labour. Then he shows them his hairy legs and explains that he is not a baba anymore. They get scared and run away and Adhiraj continues to mint in miserypur!

The other information that I have on the chap is that he has married an unsuspecting damsel – Linika and has 2 sons - Rishi aged 10.5 and Adity aged 6.5. I am trying to get additional contact information by pretending that I am a big company in the US trying to import carpets for Bush’s carpet bombing program! Should be able to get the info real soon.

Amarendran Kamak

The lanky scrawny guy from New Alipore has blossomed I believe. Have not had the chance to meet him but I did get to talk to him a couple of days ago. He is into his own business with Smart Cards and RFID stuff. I know that most of us would have started looking into space by now – but what it means is that if any of you chaps are the stock market investing types then keep a track of Amar and the moment he launches his IPO swoop onto anything that you can get your hands onto. RFID/ embedded systems is the next biggest thing to hit. It is what makes your mobiles work!

On the family front the blighter informs that he is the proud father of two.

Amish Desai

Some how I get the impression that Amish has matured! I give you the fellow and you can make up your own minds:

Its been a really long time and this re-union concept is really great in that at least we know where each one is.

After school, I was in Xaviers along with a whole lot of the others and did my B Com and simultaneously did my CA. After completing my CA I moved to Bangalore in 1988 and entered the big bad world of business !! That year I set up a Business Centre at Bangalore. I got married to Anu, a Mumbaikar, in 1992. She is an HR consultant, mainly in the software field, operating on her own. In 1996 I moved out of the Business Centre and got into travel. Currently I am running a travel agency at Bangalore. In 1997 we were blessed with a son, Aman. All in all, I would say life has been pretty kind and I really have no complaints, except that I have been very far from Cal and my visits there since 1988 have been few and far between. In fact the last time i was there was in 1995. Its really strange how the city in which I grew up is no more on my radar at all, what with all the friends having moved out !

Email: amish.desai@beleastmail.com, telstar@mantraonline.com

I'm really looking forward to this re-union and I trust there will be no hiccups !!

Kind Sir

Its been a a while so all I can offer is sincere apologies.

Please find 2 pictures, one the entire family (Kavita (wife), Sanjana (5yrs) and the twins Rohan and Tarini (13 months) and the other with all 3 kids clambering on me.

Work is going really well. I currently head the> Business Development in Wealth Management at Mashreq Bank. Have been at it now for a one and a half yrs and still enjoying Dubai.

Any and all LM old boys pasiing thru - please get in touch....it would be a pleasure to take care of you guys.

Anand Bahbadur

Now you have to give it to this guy. He informs that he is "in between jobs", "also married Kavita and has a 3 year old daughter Sanjana". That’s all the chap was able to sqeeze out for the last 2 decades!

And "Also married Kavita....." is too frought with meaning. The uninitiated would imagine him to imply that amongst other things he did in life he also married and to a girl named Kavita. But who are we kidding. The most plausible explanation that martinians are betting on is that knowing how many Anand is capable of - Kavita is probably the one which is the official face for the world. The more enlightened ones (the ones who followed him into Bombay) however are raising the bar and suggesting a higher version of this implying that Anand is also married to Kavita - got it. (Now that I have protection from Jigme Im not so scared of Anand and his martial arts!).

Ananth Raman

The most employable candidate from our batch would have to be Ananth Raman. His CV is also placed on the net and some of the boys back home have already started a wager – I am not much into gambling so my understanding of the way these things work is limited – but the way I think it goes is that there are odds on finding some one more academically qualified within our batch before Peter Dawson learns to spell his own name in which case the bets reverse and the money actually goes to the guy who taught Peter (Jigme is already staking claim to that, but now that Calwert is actually a Principal of a school the judges are confused and have employed Suhel Seth to do consultancy and he actually wants to do a TV show on this along with Mandira Bedi! (Simplicity was never a virtue amongst Martinians).

I have been at Harvard Business School since 1993. After La Marts, I went to IIT Madras (1982-86), then IIM Cal (1986-88), then after a brief stint in the real world (with Pond's/Hindustan Leve), went for a PhD at Wharton (1989-1993). I have been married since Feb 1995; my wife Padmaja and I have a 4 year old son, Nihal, and another one on the way in Feb 2005. Can't complain about life on either the personal or professional fronts.
At HBS, I am the UPS Foundation Professor of Business Logistics -- which is a grand way of saying some company (UPS) donated money to Harvard to keep me going as a prof. I will be here for the foreseeable future. My bio on the web can be found at http://pine.hbs.edu/external/facNameSearchSubmit.do.

I do not have family pictures handy but here's one of me.

Hi Deepak!

Here is the update on the Dinner-dance this year. Well we did manage some sort of "esprit de corps",what with Avik,Calvert,Sunit Singh,Soumitra Poddar, inter-alia the evening was rather eventful!

Pawan Thapar has called on me in recent times & I do occasionally meet some of our batchmates at the CC&FC.

And finally to answer your initial query about my BMR vis-a-vis Reshmi --- anyone  who has known her will also know that my BMR can be nothing if steadily unsteady!

Having said that I have to admit that I have gracefully stepped into middle-age with all its necessary attributes --- a respectably spreading girth, decently receeding hairline,et all!!!

I shall try to get the photographs of the Dinner-dance & mail them to you & will look you up when I visit Delhi provided you remember to mail me your address & telephone numbers as well.

till then,

Chittapriyo

Charlie seems to have spent half his life chasing one girl and the remaining chasing packets belonging to other people. Some guys are born with it I guess - and as we all know the incorrigible end up at La Martiniere:

"Must say your compilation of the School Roll made for some very diverting reading! No indeed you have n't offended the sensibilities of 'Netaji's grand-nephew' as you  seem to remember me as.(That qualification apart!). I've obtained a B.Com & Llb predictably from the Kolkata University. After  graduating from University College of Law,belying the family's wishes to pursue a legal career, I worked for a while with HCL & then started a Courier, Cargo & Logistics enterprise with a former HCL colleague.I met Reshmi Bhattacharya in 1981and after a prolonged  courtship spanning almost 14 yrs we finally married in May 1995, & now we have a son whom we've named Auman Subhasish Bose, all of 3 & attending school at La Martiniere here in Kolkatta !We travel a good deal around the world & I regret not having checked on this site earlier for I could've attempted to catch up with some of the boys of yore! I continue to be one of the ever-faithfuls at the La Martiniere Founder's Day Memorial Service and the subsequent Dinner Dance & will mail you about these events annually, if you so wish.

Lots to share – don’t exactly know where to begin. On the qualification front did my CA back in 87. Along the line felt that haven’t done enough so have kept up the attempt at educating myself.

Working for a company – Hi Tech Gears Ltd since 1986. This company is in the auto component sector and this is at present the talked about industry in India. Have done well over the years both at the company level and at the personal level.

Got married to Shikha an engineer by qualification. She has been shifting jobs and is currently working for Canon India as head of IT. Have a son Anand 12 years old.

Am passionately involved in photography and have been carried by Times Journal of photography. Also own a Canon 300D along with a collection of Canon and Sigma lenses. Have a collection of marriage photographs along with flowers and portraits which I am particularly fond of. My heroes in this area are Steve Mc Curry/ Raghu Rai and Atul Kasbekar in that order.

"And then we have news of Gurpreet S Pal.

Guess what - our man is also with Microsoft and decides Architecture Strategy along with Billu paji.

But people - the thing to really sit down and pause for is - what are the chances that two sardars from LMC of the same batch end up in Microsoft. Now I know a few mathematicians (Ranjan Bhachawat for example) and the odds they put forth are too huge.

When I posed this to Ranjivjit Singh (the other Microsoft sardar) and Gurpreet pat came the reply that Gurpreet's younger brother (Gurdeep) too is with Microsoft and is VP Realtime Communications and is Billu paji's right hand man!

I fainted with when I read that one!

Indranil Ghosh

"Indranil Ghosh - the guy who wore trousers which were perpetually ready for the floods - can't blame him Calcutta does that to some people and then his Netaji Bose glasses. Well guess what the bubbly, chubby lad has landed up as a Creative Director in San Fransisco. His claim to fame is that he went to college with Suhel Seth/ Jigme Wangdi/ Barry O'Brien and Shantanu Samanta at Jadavpur University!!!

The mind boggles at the working of the Lord -- La Martiniere/ batch of 82/ Suhel, Barry and Jigme/ Jadavpur University ..... the guy not only shows all visible signs of sanity but of prosperity as well .... ??!!...........!"

Dear Deepak:

I accidentally stumbled on your website while trying to find Jehangir Tankariwala's email address - what a great idea - don't know whether I'll be able to make it to the reunion, but will try if the timing permits.

After leaving LMC, I went on to Jadavpur University with Jigme, Barry, Suhel and Shantanu Samanta. After graduation, I started working in banking for a VERY short while (yes, me too) and realized that I was COMPLETELY unsuited to the role of a banker in any way shape or form!

I then entered Parsons School of Design, New York, and graduated from there in 1991 with a BFA in communication design with a specialization in packaging and branding. I also studied at a sister school in Los Angeles as an exchange student for a year in 1987.

Right after graduation I went to work at Colgate-Palmolive working on packaging and brand identity for the Palmolive line in New York. During this time I also worked and lived in Montreal, Canada.

1994 saw me move to Los Angeles with a brand consultancy firm - and then back to the corporate world as creative director for BlueCross BlueShield (a US health insurance company) in San Francisco in 1997.

I've lived in San Francisco since then, and am the Creative Director for Intuit, maker of the leading tax, accounting and financial software (and Microsoft competitor) in the US - pretty interesting since Ritu Singh threatened to fail me in art!

I'm married to Christy, a Bay area native (and accountant!) who works for a small consultancy firm - no kids yet, but we have two large dogs!

I try to get back to India every couple of years - my parents are in Cal, and was last there in winter 2003-2004. I am still in touch with Nariman (he was in our wedding) and Rana Sengupta as well as several other Martinians from other batches. I met up with Nikhil Basu a few months ago after many years.

I'm attaching a couple of pictures, one of me and beer in Canada, one of Christy and me, and the other with the venerable Dasturji.

Hope all is well - it's nice to get back in touch - har d to imagine you as a family man :-)

IG

Hey Deepak!

Mostly right on with one minor correction! My Dad worked for Bird & Co/Titaghur Paper, not Jessops - I remember Bandarji once telling the class (after I had redrawn a "phail handel" umpteen times) that the way "this fellow uses paper - you'd think his father worked for a paper company", and I replied "but he does!" and earned myself a visit to Henderson's office.

About the pants - it seems I had told the dhobi (against his protests) that in order to remove the stains on them (summer uniform) he would have to put them in the bhatti - when they were returned they had shrunk about 15% - and this was furhter excacerbated by the fact that i had had a sudden growth spurt. Rather than catch hell from my parents I decided to dress AFTER breakfast and sneak off to school without seeing them again. This woprked for three months and then I got caught by my Dad - luckily he put it down to the growth spurt....

About you being a family man - you always had interesting theories about the blue and black wearing inhabitants of Rawdon street - and your feminine focus of the moment changed from week to week!

Anyway my love and best wishes to you, Shikha and Anand too. Do you get employee discounts on Canon gear now? BTW the pictures were taken with a Canon Digital Elph. I also have a Canon EOS 300D which I love. I would love to share some of the picture I have taken with you and get your insights (but they would lose a lot at 100k). As for Steve McCurry - that Afghan girl shot of his is probably the most amazing portrait I have ever seen. I was extremely fortunate to take a class with Annie Liebovitz while at Parsons, and am also interested in portrait photography - mostly B & W but some color. Am attaching a .jpg of a portrait of Christy I took with with my old Canon AE1 (I sold it to buy additional lenses).

Tell me more about Hi-Tech gears. Don't you guys have something to do with Cummins diesels here in the US? and what is it that you so there?

By the way - Jaydeep could have asked my Mom - she lives in the same house in Cal... :-)

Best

Jaideep Bhai

Apart from making lots of money I think the award of getting off the blocks the fastest must surely go to Jaideep. I mean the time when he got married and had kids the rest of us were still learning to wipe our noses!
Great chap who started this whole thing out. I have been after him to send me the information of his family however whatever details I have of him are through his secretary who has a very distinct and heavy Bengali accent – I kept trying to tell her that I am Deepak Rai as in Lala Lajput Rai and she kept saying, "yes I understand Deepak Roy!"

Jayesh Patel

The tall and lanky fast bowler of the batch of 82. The faithful pet of our classic art teacher Mrs Ritu Singh (there is a very strong vote in favour of inviting her too to the re union). I did an opinion poll and the first image that most guys from LMC recall is one of Jayesh walking Mrs Singh back to her house after school. (Back in those days Ladia used to have an explanation for this)

Well how he has done for himself:

After doing B.Com from Xaviers, left Calcutta for good & moved to Gujarat in 1984 (a month before Indira Gandhi was assasinated) & in '85 joined Hindustan Motors as a Trainee in Halol near Baroda (GM has 100% stake, Astra Opel's are made there now) I was employee #44 & at that time & the plant was still coming up, the tie up was with Isuzu Motors for making trucks & I drove one on the test track even before I drove a car!
Got married & moved to the US in '87 (marriage for me is like oil & water), it does not last long. In 2002 I got married to a Doctor (with the maturity of a teenager) & that is in the process of breaking up right now!

Since '96 working for the present aerospace company & we make 'Ground Support Equipment' for the aviation industry. The aircraft components have to be taken out & tested from time to time, that is where we come in. Air India & Indian Airlines are one of the many customers world wide.

In 2000 did my C.P.M. (Certified Purchasing Manager) certification & finishing my 2 year stint as a Board of Director for the 'Connecticut Association of Purchasing Management'. Parents live with me & they want me to go for an MBA. Aub budhape mein pudh ke kya faida!

I am attaching a pic taken near one of the machines that we make. (Pretending to work!)

If I can be of any service to you, you know where to catch me. This hospital is opp. the Salt Lake Stadium and besides the shopping Mall Charnock City.

J.P. Singh Deo

This guy is good. He is a doting father as you can make out and still continues to monkey around….. In his own words:

Good to be in touch once again and thanks to this brilliant idea of 2007 Reunion.

Good to hear from you. After school had moved I was in Bhowanipur College along with Sanjeev Ladia, Mohammad Jadwet, Soumo Bose, Teji, etc. Thereafter three and half years I worked Jaideep Chitlangia and in 1989 I joined the Birlas. Initially, I was looking after their exports (merchant trading) to Europe / East Africa / Middle east / SE Asia. 2002 I was transfered to the Birla Hospitals (B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre and The Calcutta Medical Research Institute) as the Marketing Head.

I was married (to Savita) in 1988 in Udaipur like I had mentioned earlier. I am blessed with two daughters (both in La Marts)- Kritika is in Class 8 and Mrigakshi is in 3 ( both preparing for thier final exams. Thank god those days are gone for us. Incidently, Mrigakshi was in the winning relay team of Macaulay House in the school sports - Gold Medal peyeche. She has also been clocked as the second fastest girl in her batch. All my life in school I did bugger all. I remember getting just one certificate in Javeline.

Family Snap - Self, Mrigakshi, Savita (wife) and Kritika Wife and self at Golf Tournament eve where I won the tournament Friends - Ronny, Sunit, Jadwet, JP

All my sporting acievements have come after leaving school. Mainly in Cycle Polo and Golf.

Biggest thing is that in spite of all work around badmashi abhi bhi nahin choda. Like there is a saying that Bandar jitna bhi budda ho jata hai gulati marna nahin bhulta, ha!ha!

Wonder if anyone still calls him that but I kind of like the thunderous sound of that. As soon as I asked him to send me his details he called me up and we chatted for about 30 minutes. He is settled in New York and from his tone it seems that he misses India and all of us. I think apart from Jaideep he has the largest contact list. It was indeed sad to learn of the demise of his parents in most tragic circumstances. But the lively sardar has not lost his sense of humor nor his zest for life. In his own words:

Good to be in touch my friend......would love to catch up and share notes.I have two sons - Viraj (11) and Varun (7). I got married in 1991 with Vibha in Chandigarh.

We were in Singapore till 2000 and have been in the US since (in New York). I work with Bain & Company as a Management Consultant.

Hello All,

It was wonderful and very nostalgic meeting up with many of you in ‘Good ‘ol Cal ‘ in December 2005 at the RCGC. We are looking forward to this December.

Your efforts and thoughts behind reconnecting and the web base is commendable Deepak and Jaydeep.

Pawan, reminded me of who I was as a child, ‘Mischief’ and it was wonderful with the joy we all met, right Avik ?

JP is the first after many years who made contact with me when he traveled to the Gulf region, but unfortunately could not make it to Bahrain is where I live for many years.

I have been based in Bahrain for many many years, managing and own a Professional Water Treatment Company established in 1989. As a company we take great pride in our standing as we are pegged against the worlds biggest in competition for application chemistry, technology and service ability. In 2005 we have begun operations in India, with our national head quarters in down townNew Delhi. A great challenge ahead for us.

Been married since 1993, my wife Pooja and I have a lovely son Nikhil who turned 9 on February 1. He goes to a school here in Bahrain - St Christopher’s.

Nikhil was in and out of Sanjay Agarwal’s house almost everyday last December when we visited Calcutta. Meeting him after all these years and yet it seemed time had not gone by. He and his wife Simi were extremely hospitable.

If I crossed Sanjay Jayant on the street I promise I would not have known… what happened? I could not say that of Suhel Seth, just the same. Incidentally my wife’s maiden name was a Seth as well. Ranjiv, your wedding pictures are real nice.

Could not meet up with Adhiraj, but had a very long chat.

Look forward to meeting all of you.

Cheers !!!
Kabir

Is in Delhi too. All the talk about getting our friends across the road to join in and "some of us are married to the mob" got me thinking. On closer examination I discovered that the hero himself has lassoed on to batch mate Nandini Dasgupta. And is he sheepish about it!! All I know from the Charlie is that she was a journalist and is at present looking after home and hearth.

On his own end our man did his Eco from Xaviers (and all of us know what that means) the his post graduation (?!!!) from Delhi. Where after he joined ITC Financial Services. From here he joined the Gaitonde group (leather people) and helped them build the brand of HiDesign. At present he heads PR Integral in Delhi – travels a lot, works hard, and parties even harder!! He informs me that he has grown balder! Wife : Nandini (La Martiniere same batch – was a journalist right home and hearth.

Dear Deepak,

I am an old Martinian who would have been in the same cohort as you. I left LMC after Class 6, went to a couple of other schools in Cal before coming to Canada. Over the years I have wondered where some of my friends are. Tonight I received a message from Praphul Misra who was also in our cohort. It prompted me to Google Apurva Mathur's name and that took me to your website. It's an amazing site, and made my heart palpatate seeing some of my old friend's names and contact information.

BTW, Praphul is the CEO of NetCarrots and his contact info is:
Email: information.praphul@netcarrots.com
Web: www.netcarrots.net

I am intrigued by the idea of the re-union in 2007. I've been visiting Cal every couple of years and would love to be kept in the loop as to when the re-union will be taking place. Although I didn't graduate from LMC, and there will probably be many guys whom I won't know, there will hopefully be enough old friends to make it worth attending. Thanks for building and maintaining the site, and for your humorous commentaries. I'd love to hear the story about Niaz and Nafisa. Nafisa was a very good friend of my sister, and Niaz of my brother. I hear that Nafisa is now a politician. Any news of Niaz?

Well my head is floating with countless memories of LMC.

Kind regards,

Hi Abhijit, Praphul and Apurva,

I thought you might like to see what we looked like in Class 3.I'm not very good at remembering names and surnames anymore, so please help. I might also be wrong about some of the names. The only ones I'm certain of are Apurva, Sally Sen, and myself.
Praphul and Abijit, please identify yourselves if you are in the photo. I apologize for not being able to put names to your faces.
Front row from the left is:
Kabir, ?, Nitin, Apurva, Sally Sen, Kapil Kapur, ?, ? ?
Middle row: I think Nariman Dastur is second from the left. The fellow behind Sally is George. And perhaps Sanjiv Seth is third from the right.
Back row: ?, ?, Me (Mark), Phillipe, ?, ?, ?. Phillipe was the son of a French diplomat, who spoke no english and was always bugging everyone and getting us into trouble.
Deepak, if you post the photo on your site perhaps some of the other guys could identify themselves.

Kind regards,

Mark

Nirmalaya Banerjee

Studious, reserved and remains a no nonsense guy. I do not know how many people can recollect – but the image of Nirmalaya that immediately comes to mind is as follows:

Class 10 board exams are threatening. The batch just before us has done miserably in English. (There is a story of Niaz Ali and his illustrious sister Nafisa Ali related to this – I am not sure if it is true but it was interesting and anything that is interesting in La Martiniere is obviously unprintable!) English teacher Mr Raja walks in very earnestly and starts off an explanation of why we Martinians got the rack in English last time. As a case in point he asks something about the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Up ejects Nirmalaya and in his earnest voice begins something like " The Pied Piper entered with a business like look on his face ……" and boy did Raja start dancing! "Typical Martinian answer", "Typical Martinian answer" he went about actually hopping. The entire class is in splits. Sanjay Aggarwal was sitting in front to Raja. And if you guys remember Raja had this habit of spewing a virtual rain fall capable of watering a rain forest while speaking animatedly. Sanjay lifts up the desk lid to protect himself and Raja thinks he wants to hide his laughter. He tells Sanjay "no no its all right you can laugh, typical Martinian answer!" and the hell that had already broken loose continues.

Well I finally caught up with him. (We have been living in the same building for the past 2 years!). He too is married to the mob only his moll is 6 batches our junior. From what I know he did his engineering from BHU and was working with Hughes till recently. Currently he is with NIIT.

Pawan Thapar

I used to often think about school and friends, but never thought it would be possible to know the whereabouts of long lost school friends.

Ever since I learnt about this site from Jayesh Patel & Rajeev Madeka towards the beginning of this year, I have been keeping track of it. The site was not updated for a considerable period between May and August'04, probably due to heavy rains. When I found the site being updated on two consecutive days this month, I was prompted to shed my lethargy and reintroduce myself to the class.

After school I went to Chandigarh and graduated in Economics & then did MBA from Punjab University. Thereafter I joined M/S K C Thapar & Bros (Coal Sales) Ltd, and am currently based at Bilaspur in Chattisgarh. I was married to Ritu in 1992. We have two daughters named Naina & Meghna, who are aged 11 & 9 respectively.

Rajat Bhatia

Initially it took me a while to place Rajat Bhatia. I can bet that not many would remember the name. But everyone would remember that we had only one 6 pointer in our batch and that he was shy and diligent. I remember very clearly Mr SK Singh (Chemistry teacher very proud of his Jamshedpur - TISCO back ground) asking Rajat how Cement was made and Rajat shot off all the chemical formulas in each reaction at each stage from lime stone to cement. (Guys believe me it is complicated - even today!)

But the memory which is perhaps most endearing is as follows:

The year is 1981 (one year before we are to leave school) cold winter morning. (Calcutta has its limitations when it comes to being cold - but you know how memories are - if its cold its cold). We are gathering on the round chapel stair case for the 1500 mt race. The atmoshere is charged. There is talk of the six pointer taking part (that was Rajat). The un announced hero is already Aniruddha Bonnerjee. The guy who decended on us from Darjeeling with lots of stamina and poetry. The chap used to practice running long distance with a fag in his mouth, (I tried it once and almost killed myself) and wrote stuff like "sorrow hollows out our hearts to make room for joy to flow". (Incidentally his elder sister informed me that Aniruddha had a most unfortunate fall on his head as he was being born. That explained most of it.) Then news filters around that Rajat is also not to be discounted. At once bets start flying around. There is an immediate comparison between the British middle distance runners.  Steve Ovett the favorite for the 1500 mts was upstaged by Sebastian Coe in the 80 Olympics in a very interesting race, just a couple of months ago. The race begins with a lot of gusto, loud cheers and noise. Two runners begin to separate themselves from the pack.

Unfortunately this is where I lapse into a comatose! I do not remember who won.....! Help anyone please! Aniruddha / Rajat??

Rajat has immediately come to my rescue. He informs me that in 81 Aniruddha won the 1500 mt. In Rajats own words:

"That is true about my being the only 6 pointer in the Class or perhaps in Eastern India also in that year. However, there is always luck involved in such things because I was on the borderline in 3 subjects (History, Geography and Hindi) - one mark less and I would not have been a six pointer. I think that people in India focus a lot on grades unlike the USA where students usually never bother so much about grades even at places like Columbia University . Grades help but being well rounded is better. The thing about which I have the most fond memories about La Marts are the 800 m and the 1500 m races in 1981 and 1982. Bonnerjee beat me in the 1500 m in 1981 but for some reason he did not run in 1982 which helped me win that year. Avik Saha and I tied for the 800 m in 1982 and we had a collision at the finish line. The teachers had the good sense to declare us joint winners. Also, playing cricket at La Marts was fun because of the smaller field.

Talking about grades, IIM Ahmedabad is the worst rat race for grades I have ever witnessed. I was quite taken aback by the guys from the various IITs who congregated at IIMA and who spent a lot of time calculating their GPAs and those of others, especially their competitors, correct to three decimal places. In my life I have never seen a bunch of people who were more obsessed about grades than my class mates at IIM Ahmedabad. Given the fact that my dorm at IIM Ahmedabad had the greatest concentration of Industrial Scholars in the history of IIMs, it was absolutely crazy. Every guy's worth was measured in terms of his/her rank in the class and the Professors somehow fueled the rat race. Most students from IIMA cannot even remember the names of all the 16 to 18 courses that they did each year, leave alone remember what was taught in the courses."

Hi Deepak,

I saw your website of the La Martiniere for Boys, Class of 82. It is a really good website and it was interesting to read about our other classmates.
I was in La Marts too in the Class of 82 and my contact details are as follows:

After La Marts, I went to St Stephen's College, Delhi where Aniruddha Bonnerjee and Sumit Roy were in the same class as me 1982-85. I have met Sumit a few times in London and Vicky Bindra in Singapore but have lost touch with Bonnerjee. After St. Stephen's, I spent two years at IIM Ahmedabad and then worked with Citibank in India before leaving for further studies at Columbia University, New York.

I have worked in quite a few countries - Booz.Allen & Hamilton in Sydney, Merril Lynch Capital Markets in Hong Kong, Lehman Brothers in London and Citibank Global Asset Management, London. These days, I live in Florida running my own firm, Financial Engineering LLC which consults to many Wall Street firms and hedge funds. We are in the process of starting a new hedge fund Neural Capital to be launched in January 2005.

I got married in July 2001 in Odessa to my wife Diana who comes from that city.

Enclosed are some pictures of me and my wife.

Thanks,
Rajat

Ranjivjit (Horse no more) Singh

"Guys the pictures of Suzy and Ranjiv took thier time coming in but the curious aspect is that Ranjiv is visibly contended with the union with Suzy.

See I am an expert photographer (have been featured in national magazines and portrait expressions is my forte - in short I know what I am saying. Amish please stop lapeting!) - and I can bet that either Ranjiv is sozzled out of his mind or he has been singing the Gurdas Maan hit song of the 80's "aaho kudi layne hai --" the night before. Knowing Ranjiv it is probably both!"

Though I haven’t met him yet I have it on official grounds that he has changed. I got to speak to his wife Suzy, and she informs me that he has lost some of his hair. From the horses mouth itself I learnt that horses are now history! Dr Spencer and "Who moved my Cheese"!!!!!

In the meantime Ranjivjit is the big boss at Microsoft India. Still as warm as ever and may God Bless him.

I have Suzy’s word that she would send me a family photograph and details of how they met. In turn I have promised to give her juicy details of a certain M Choudhary and Ranju’s Enfield motorcycle with those Harley Davidson handle bars!

Children: Simarjeet Singh 2 years/ Esha Singh 11 years

Deepak good to hear from you too. I got an e-mail from Nirmalya today after I contacted him with info from your website. I haven't talked to him in over 10 years. It was nostalgic to talk to old friends again. I will definitely look you up when I am in Cal. I have some SW development projects and I may be coming to ND also. I am also looking to buy real estate in the ND/Gurgaon areas. Any suggestions for brokers/ agents that I can work with? I have given included a brief description of my activities since I left LaMarts.

After LaMarts, I was at JU for 4 years and graduated there in 1987 and left India on August 15th, 1987 (Independence day, huh!) to attend the University of Southern California. I received my Ph.D in 1991 and after a bunch of corporate jobs, decided to go into business. I guess I was always the entrepreneur, since my wife insists that no one could work with me. She should know! I started a company, Senior Care Pharmacy Services' that provides medical products, supplies, consultants and deliveries to skilled nursing, assisted living and convalescent homes. We started with a modest $50k and 2 employees, me and my wife. The company has grown since that time to 3 locations across California and services over 20,000 lives. We are looking to have a presence in Arizona and Nevada next year.

I married Kim in 1996 and she is my best friend, confidant and well wisher. She is California born and raised (yes, those people exist!) and so, Calcutta, when we visited there last year, was a shock. We have one dog (a Dalmatian), who thinks he is a child since he goes everywhere with us. We live in suburban Orange County, south of Los Angeles in a town called Anaheim Hills, home to Disneyland and the Angels baseball team. Now that our responsibilities at the office are at a minimum, we get to travel quite a bit. We recently bought an RV (motor home) and I am still getting the hang of driving that thing!

Warm Regards,
Samit Banerjee

Hey Deepak:

How r u old buddy? Long time no talk. I am going to india in Nov and while trying to look up La Martiniere, came upon your website. Awesome! Thank you so much for putting it together. It brought back a whole host of memories. The guy in our class picture with Sally Sen (class 3, I believe) middle row, second from right is me. There are so many other names that come to mind.

If you need me to send you an updated bio, let me know. Attached some recent pictures and my wife Kim (yes, I married a non-Indian!) on our last trip to India and Europe.

Again great job on the website. I would never have known about all the guys, had I not accidentally stumbled upon your website. Lets stay in touch. Maybe we can get together when I am in Cal in November. Where do you live? Best regards to you and the family.

It's great to hear about you all from the website.

It definitely proved a eye opener for all of us as we come to the whereabouts of everyone in our batch. For instance I visited Nirmalya in Jan 2003 and could have easily dropped in at your place had I known u were staying in the same complex. I was then working with ICICI Infotech Ltd as a consultant and posted in Delhi ( I did meet Kunal then ). Now I am with ISS Infoway Pvt Ltd located in Kolkata and would be relocating to US (by early next year); am working as an ERP consultant in Oracle Financials. My wife is working as a Manager (Corporate Communications - East) with Aptech Ltd. More details about me would follow shortly to be included in the list that you so meticulously listed at the website.
